Over the course of this past week, I’ve had several conversations about the ways we can stay connected anytime but especially as the pandemic continues. When circumstances around us seem so overwhelming, something as simple as sending a card can seem too inconsequential. Let me assure you – that is the time to SEND THE CARD!
WHY?
Sometimes the simplest of gestures can have the most meaning. The fact that you, amidst all this chaos, took the time to make a card, write a message and actually get the card in the mail speaks volumes to the recipient. Never underestimate the power of letting someone know that not only are you thinking of them, but you thought enough of them to do something about it. When someone from near or far comes to mind, take a moment and SEND THE CARD!
Does sending a card really make much of a difference?
Yes – it matters!! I’ve sent many cards over the last few months. The messages received in return show just how much the thought counted to them. These responses caught me by surprise and certainly made me smile. It made me happy to know I had brightened someone’s day.
Early on in pandemic, I send a card to a lovely young woman who is a nurse. She messaged me to say that she found the card in her mailbox after work on the day she learned she was going to do a rotation on the COVID floor. She said it really brightened her day. Another young woman has been doing her best to educate anyone who wants to learn about the racial inequities she sees around her. It hasn’t been easy. She said, “This is so amazing and it couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. My spirit is so lifted.” I sent a thank you to another young lady who posted videos of her beautiful singing to help brighten the world. She said, “It was such a bright spot in my day!”
Just a couple of weeks ago I won a prize at an event a friend was hosting online to share her business. I sent her a thank you card. In the envelope, I sent another note card and envelope for her to use to send a smile to someone else. The response I got from her was humbling. She was infatuated with the idea of sharing another card so someone else could continue to spread smiles. She was grateful for the thanks, the card to pass along to another and the idea for such a simple act of kindness to brighten others’ days.
But…..
But…..
my card isn’t perfect
there is a small smudge.
the sentiment inside is a little crooked
I didn’t quite get the image centered on the mat
I don’t know what to say.
BUT NOTHING – SEND THE CARD!
A simple message saying, “I want you to know I was thinking about you and I hope that you are doing well,” carries a lot of weight. This doesn’t pertain to only the pandemic although it has brought the effects of such a seemingly simple gesture into focus for the thoughtful and heartfelt gesture it is in the eyes of the recipient.
It’s time to raid your card stash!
If you’ve been crafting for awhile, you have a stash of cards! They may be leftover from a class that you tucked away and kind of forgot about. Or they are cards you made years ago that you have saved as a sample so you can make it again someday (although you have no idea if you still have those supplies or where they are). Time to raid that stash and make the people in your life smile with your thoughtfulness. Or maybe you want to start card making and are concerned about how to use all the cards.
There will always be someone to whom you can send a card to brighten their day, console them, celebrate them and cheer them on. So what are you waiting for – go SEND THE CARD(S)!!!
Loved your note about sending out notes to people.
